Chicky Chicks

Everyone already knows about Nora's birthday surprise...her baby chicks.  We've posted some pictures on Facebook, but they haven't made too much of an appearance on our blog.  Now's their time to shine.  When Nora got them they were 2 and 4 days old.  She did handle them often and they have survived.  These are our first pets as a family.  (I don't think we could handle much more honestly.)  They grew quite fast considering they are both a little over 10 weeks old now.  We didn't know if we had roosters or hens but we named them anyways.  The brown one reminded us of a chipmunk so his name is Chip.  The grey one we named McNugget but Aaron didn't really like it so we compromised for Maximus McNugget.  Turns out Chip's a rooster and Maximus McNugget is a hen.  Oh well!

When we got them it was just a fun, temporary thing.  Turns out we grew a little attached to them and decided eggs would be a good thing so we're keeping them.  (Much to the dismay of quite a few family & friends!)

After about 6 weeks of living in our garage/backyard they had to have more space.  I justified having them at home because our HOA covenants say 2 caged birds (!) are okay.  I didn't think a chicken coop would qualify as a cage though.  We also are a little short in the yard area so Aaron built them a new coop and moved them to my Mom's.  My grandpa, Rara, calls it the Taj MaCoop.  It was pretty massive for two young chickens.  We knew we wanted more than 1 hen so we did some bartering and got 6 more hens from my Dad's.  {Who am I kidding...Farmer PeePaw and his neighborhood are probably outnumbered by his chickens at his house & farm.  He willingly offered some he would not be mating.  He tries to keep the breed perfect ones for mating since most of his chickens are rare species.}

3 laying boxes for the eggs...one day
The window was my 1 request...curious minds need to see in!  The wheels get put on when Aaron moves it every week or so.  It may even help Lala & Gpa Steve grow some grass, some day, with all that 'fertilizer'.  =)

Since Chip is a rooster, we weren't looking for fertilized eggs, no one likes a rooster obnoxiously crowing all hours of the day or night, and roosters can be a little hostile we sent him to live on the farm.  Literally.  PeePaw's farm where he was hatched.  They spent a few days together with all the new hens and you could really tell the difference.  Maximus is the prettiest of the hens and Chip was so protective of her.  The two of them were always together and the rest of hens were together.  Without Chip we were hoping (and it appears to have) then hens would all get along.  I'd be lying if I said it wasn't heartbreaking to separate Maximus McNugget and Chip.  I'd also be lying if I said tears never welled up in my eyes.  Chip was panicked in his car cage and pacing to figure out how to get back in the coop with Maximus McNugget.
"Bye Chip!"

Jacob loves to watch these chickens

A few words of advice:  If you ever find yourself with baby chicks, don't think you won't fall for them.  They're so cute & tiny.  Their poop doesn't smell nearly as bad for the first several weeks.  They do grow up though. They end up not so cute (but still really soft!).  They don't ever listen and come when you call them.  However, we have one hen that comes close by when we are out there.  Maximus won't come to me, but she always acts like she wants to.  PeePaw has one rooster, Chip, that comes near him as well.  They aren't as scared of people...which was my whole intention of handling them a lot their life. I mean, as it turns out, they are our pets afterall.  And finally, if you decide to keep them start saving.  A chicken coop is NOT cheap!  Nora loves visiting the chicky-chicks (as she still calls them) at Lala's house & we can't wait to visit Chip really soon!

Lala & Coppa Sieve

Nora loves her Lala & Coppa Sieve (Grandpa Steve)!

Something else she loves almost as much as them...sweets!  Even the whipped-cream-topped-cinnamon-sugar-tortillas they give you at Don Pedros.

Aunt Lani

Back in April, Rachael (Aaron's middle sister) had surgery to have her gallbladder removed.  I volunteered to help watch the kids for a couple of days for her to have the surgery and begin her recovery.  (Since she has 4 kids and watches Jacob also during the day.)  We had a blast, but they sure wore me out...and that was with one in school all day and another in school half the day!  To make things easier for me, we all spent the night at Grandma's (Aaron's mom's).  It was a mad house some times!  I managed to take a few pictures of all our fun.

We watched a little tv and of course played outside to burn some energy.

One day we ventured to playgroup.  I had to borrow a van just for us all to fit!  It was a rainy day so it was storytime at the library.  I wouldn't recommend it with 5 kids.  Even if your sister-in-law, Emily, comes.  As if the stories aren't hard enough to sit through for the kids, craft time was hard to keep from total chaos.  Since kids eat for 99cents, we also squeezed in some Lake Wylie Pizza.  It is one of our favorite things to do on Wednesdays.  We ended up with some loud, restless kids and one asleep before lunch was through.

Somehow we survived.  We'd even do it again if there was a similar situation.  I just am not having 6 kids.  At least not 6 kids ages 6 and under!  Thank goodness I'm just the aunt for most of them!  =)

Bama Bound!

Note:  My barely-a-year-old-camera died.  It died a sad death of falling-from-a-toddler's-hands-onto-the-cold-concrete-floor-of-Walmart.  I won't even tell what I had to go through to get the pictures off the camera.  That is why this (& the next few) posts are so late.

Nora & I hadn't ever been to Alabama so when one of Aaron's cousins, Lauren, sent us a wedding invite a trip was planned!  Since we are the proud parents owners of 2 baby chicks, we decided to let them stay with some of Nora's friends for the weekend.  It was the first time we left them to go out of town.  Nora wasn't very happy about it.  The poor girl cried.  Quite a bit.

After what seemed like forever, we made it to the Alabama welcome center.  Here's Nora (excuse the car seat hair) proving we made it!

We arrived Friday night (April 13th) & spent the night in a hotel.  Saturday morning we met up with PawPaw & Dee Dee, who were also in town for the wedding.  We did a little shopping and had some yummy lunch at Olive Garden.

We went around town a little and met some of Aaron's extended family members.  Finally, it was time to get dolled up for our 3rd wedding in 4 months.  =)  We arrived and the wedding was gorgeous! Lauren was a beautiful bride! It was outside near the water.  Lauren & some talented family (see Vintage Shore) worked hard on the wedding and it was perfect!  (Want to see more pictures?  Freshly Bold Photography) Congratulations again to Lauren & Brandon!

There was a beautiful candy buffet of white/pearl & tan candies.  The wedding favors were bags to fill of candy and some darling bird magnets.

Nora & Paw Paw

While most of us were downing candy or lemonade, Nora was entertaining the guests with her dancing to the band.  She is not shy!  She went right up to them to dance every chance she could.

These next pictures crack me up.  Nora took off with my camera to have a good time.  I found these pictures after the wedding.  Some of the other little girls 'helped' her take some.  (By the way, I have an on-going post that will one day be published full of Nora's photography skills.)

We loved getting to meet and/or see family in Alabama.  Here's Nora with Aaron's great aunt Regina.

After the wedding, Nora quickly fell asleep in the car.  We woke her to eat at Cracker Barrel.  That wasn't a good idea, until she found the toys.  Poor Paw Paw gave in to her insistence for this fancy ball. (She had been eyeing it since our last trip to TN.)  Lucky, spoiled girl!  I will say it's been almost 2 months and she still plays with it almost daily.  Maybe one day I'll post about it...it's that special.

Sunday we checked out more family at PaPa & Grandma Beth's beach house.  It was fabulous!  We ate, visited, ate, & visited some more.  Just the way we like to hang!  Aaron got to help his uncle, Alan, empty & set the crab traps for the feast later.  One was a tangled and we weren't sure Alan would make it out dry!

We took a short ride on the gator over to the beach.  Isn't it gorgeous?!?  I've finally found another beach I like as much as Siesta Key.  (I've also decided a gator is a must for the beach!)  It was cold, but Nora loved putting her toes in the sand & ocean.  She is a beach lover!

When we finally pulled ourselves away from the good times, we started our ride home...the scenic route.  We followed Paw Paw onto the ferry to get over to Dauphin Island.  It was Nora's first ferry ride and she did enjoy it!

We stopped by Aunt Regina's house to see family (especially baby Evan) and eat some more.  That is when we were fully introduced to the gem called Duck Dynasty.  =)  After pulling Aaron away from yet another episode, we finally left.  Really late.  Lucky for Nora & I, Aaron drove us home safely.  We love when we can travel to visit family!  We had a great time & can't wait to go back to really enjoy the beach!  Roll Tide!
