18 Months!

Sunday, October 2nd Nora reached a big milestone...she's 18 months now!

Before her shots
After her shots

Everything was great at her check up appointment.  I love her doctor & the office. They're all so nice, easy, & caring.  Nora got a few shots, including the flu shot.  She's such a trooper.  By the time the last shot was done and the nurse was putting on the band-aids she started crying.  She pulled those band-aids off as quickly as she could and then stopped.  Crazy girl...thought it was the band-aids hurting her.  =)  Nora now weighs 25 lbs 8 oz (50-75%ile), is 33 1/2 in. tall (75-90%ile), and her head is 33 1/4 cm around (25%ile).  18 months is such a fun age.  There are so many things Miss Independent can do now...there's no stopping her.  Well, I can, but it's not fun.  This girl is strong willed and stuborn but luckily only for a little while and then her attention moves on to something else.

Here are some things Nora can do now:
  • Drink from a lid-less cup (& enjoys it well even when it spills, usually on purpose)
  • Turn around to get her hooded bath towel on when she's ready to get out of the bath
  • Find soap or her baby wash, lather up her hands, and wash her body
  • Say 'shower' when she wants to get in.  Probably to play with her tub crayons that she loves!
  • Take a shower...meaning stand under the water to get wet and to rinse off
  • Open up all the shampoo, etc. bottles in the bath and try to use and/or sink them (joy!)
  • Throw a ball (or anything really...even a remote at Daddy's head)
  • Say "sorry" (hallelujah!), 'gucky' (yucky)
  • Calls me "Mama", "Mommy", or "Mani" (perhaps Mani is Mommy & Lani mixed?)
  • Makes rooster, dog, cat, cow, & duck noises
  • Still uses some sign language as she 'says' words
  • Her favorite sign is 'baby'...uses it everytime she sees a baby or hears anything close to the word 'baby'.  Yes, even with the word 'maybe' sometimes.
  • Copies or repeats most words you say
  • LOVES to facetime.  Unfortunately everyone doesn't have it, but she loves to do it with Millie (& Niki) and PePaw (that's how she's started saying Grandpa to my Dad)
  • LOVES the camera or video camera.  She can be entertained for a quite a while watching herself.  Thanks to Apple she can watch herself being videoed on the ipod and then watch the video afterwards.  Entertainment.
  • LOVES brushing her teeth.  Just discovered her baby toothpaste and HAS to have it on there if she sees me use toothpaste.  If she sees her toothbrush, she cannot pass up brushing her teeth just once more.
  • LOVES brushing her hair.  She's done this for a while but now she's getting into brushing mine also.  Good thing I have a tough scalp.
  • Yelling.  She must love it, because she does it all the time.  Just for fun.  Because she wants something.  Or in the store because she likes the way it echoes.  Sometimes it's with words...often it's just hoots and hollers.
  • Saying her prayers.  She's folded her arms for a while, but now mumbles prayers to which exclaimed 'AMEN's follow.
  • Says 'hi' or 'hey' to each person she sees in the store.  Even if it's the poor worker she's already said it to 6 times in the last 30 seconds.  Luckily, they usually say it back as they quickly walk away to stop the game.  It's really awkward after the person's been greeted and walks over to us to ask how she is.  She just looks at them.  We haven't mastered what to say next. Ha.
  •  Throw tantrums.  Another one she's been able to do but now it's even more often and extravagant.  It may be because she doesn't want to get into her car seat, stop playing in driver's seat, or sneaking into my gum.  (Among many other things.)
  • Still way into jewelry and shoes.  Wayyy into them.  Loves to walk around in my shoes.  I'm amazed she even finds matching ones sometimes.  That can be a feat for me in that messy closet!
  • Finds little things all over the house and carries them around.  It can be a ball, a small toy, or especially something she shouldn't like money or a screw.  (What? Your house doesn't have screws hidden all over...must not be married to a contractor.)  She definitely keeps the small things picked up around here.
  • LOVES to climb.  This is true at home, at the park, or in Nursery at church.  That is not something she inherited from me.
  • LOVES (like really loves) Nursery at church.  We open the door & she happily walks in.  Probably to climb on the shopping cart for the umpteenth time.
  • Follows simple directions.  This is wonderful!  She can pick up stuff, put stuff back, throw stuff away, etc.  Notice the word 'can'.  Doesn't mean she always does.
  • Enjoys eating apples and tries to eat any fruit like biting an apple.  Even oranges. Gross, I know.
  • Be tough.  She must have gotten that from me (HA!).  This girl is extra tough.  Falling on her face doesn't phase her sometimes.  Must be why she thinks it's okay to hit or push anything her same size or smaller.  I may have a bully on my hands.  Oh dear.
  • Watch tv.  She likes to watch Sesame Street now and enjoys sitting on the couch or her bean bag chair for at least 2-5 minutes at a time.  Or she enjoys dancing with Ellen.  Lots of things can catch her attention now.
  • Poop in the tub.  If you missed this one on Facebook.  Yuck.  It happened to us for the first time this month.  Can I say yuck again?

And the most exciting thing about being 18 months?  PEANUT BUTTER!  She LOVES it!  To celebrate we had a peanut butter day on her 18 month birthday.

Peanut Butter Cap 'n Crunch
Bananas with peanut butter
PB & J (her new favorite...2nd only to bananas)
Sharing with Daddy
PB & J with Tutu

Peanut butter crackers
Only other peanut butter treat was mini Reese's cups.  I didn't get a picture of it.  What a great way to celebrate 18 months...she really enjoyed!  Don't you just love her?  I could eat her up all day, every day. <3

Great Friends, Great Places, Great Times

We have these great friends, April & Travis.

We've been friends with them basically since we moved to Lake Wylie.  We enjoy a lot of the same things so we spend a lot of time together {when April's not working}.  They don't have any kids {uh hmm} so Nora's the closest thing to a kid to them.  She loves them.  They're like an aunt & uncle to her.  They're the type of friends that will do anything you need.  Like when we lived with them for at least a month while we fixed up our house.  It's easy to hang out with them and do nothing or work together and put on a sweet party.  For the past several years they have begged us to go to the beach with them but every year there's something going on the same time that we can't.  This year Aaron' was working in Tennessee so Nora & I went for a few days.  They have a very nice condo they rent in a nice part of North Myrtle Beach.  It's no secret I'm not a big fan of Myrtle Beach {shocking, I know!}.  The beach was pretty but the accommodations were really sweet.  Nora had all the attention a girl could want with all of Travis' family around.  The drive wasn't my favorite but luckily Nora is so easy & good.  Here's a few pictures from the few days we were there:

Enjoying Krispy Kreme
Swimming in one of the 2 big pools.  There was also 2 kiddie pools, a hot tub, and a lazy river.
Travis playing with Nora.

Chasing the birds.  The same birds Travis feeds constantly to annoy people.  Good thing the beach is flat & really wide.

Loving the beach toys they got her.

Asking for more water.  You can see their place in the top right corner.  It was beach front.

Can't decide which tool to use!

She just loves water!

Happy girl.

April & Travis, thanks for letting us enjoy the beach with y'all!  We love you!

Cabinets & Chickens

At the end of August through the first week of September we took at trip to Summerville to see my Dad, Vivian, & Ashleigh.  Oh, and the chickens.  Aaron didn't have a lot of work going on so he was able to do a job for my Dad that has been put on hold for years now.  Aaron built new cabinet doors for all 26 cabinets in their kitchen.  It was not a small feat.  He worked and worked while we hung out & played with the chickens.

Silly girl found a cooler to play in.

Nora & I got to watch the {not-so-baby-anymore} chicks get moved outside.  We were highly entertained...especially watching Xan trying to catch them!  We're glad Xan came to hang out with us there on his first long weekend of USC.

Nora talking to the big chickens.  This is where the little chickens live now and the big chickens roam free.

The egg-laying-coop for the hens

Our favorite part about the chickens is finding the eggs.  Nora discovered the egg collecting bin.  The nests the hens lay in is what she's looking at in there.  You just reach in and get the eggs they laid.

I let Nora carry in 1 egg each time we collected some.  She thought it was a ball or something and was swinging her arm around crazily.  I just kept saying "soft, soft, soft ..." to her until we made it inside.  It worked!  She'd stop sometimes and pet the egg softly and say "soft" herself.  It was cute.

Found an egg!
Nora ate her first fresh egg.  (Actually I did too this trip.)  They were good.  Tasted just like eggs. =)  They are a brighter yellow color.  Nora also became very good at using her fork during this trip.

Nora & Aaron playing in the backyard
Nora got really good a crowing like a rooster and loved staring out the window at the chickens.  She's growing so fast and got into everything possible there.  At least she's entertaining!

Like always we had a great time!!

All Good Things Must Come to an End

Alas the last week of our summer vacation.  It's always a bittersweet time.  Nora & I love, love our time in Florida but we definitely miss Aaron & can't wait to get back home to him!

We were so lucky to be able to stay with The Johnsons almost an extra week after the cruise.  They are so good to us!  Most of that week The Browns got to stay also.  That meant more party time for us.  By Tuesday everyone else had left to go home.

Some of us had a friendly Twister competition.

The winner of each age group played in a 'finale'.

The twister audience (aka family)

We spent time hanging out.

Millie & Nora enjoyed Ruby's doll bed as a couch.

Nora loved taking Ruby's sink out and climbing in.

Nora loved to dress up in the boys stuff.
Nora swimming in their community pool.

Nora swimming with her floaties.

One day we went to this amazing mangrove place.  We took a canoe and paddle board out to a small sand bar/island and took turns going through the mangrove tunnels.  While there were a lot of small critters and some tall grass underwater it was fun.  I've never seen anything like it and it's definitely a to-do again next year!

Emma, Riley, & Beau paddling together

Nora enjoying the sand bar.

Another favorite thing we did was I went with my aunts (Molly & Karen) to the fabric store and bought fabric to make Nora a fabulous outfit.  After The Browns left Molly helped me sew most of it.  I still haven't finished it, but I definitely will before next summer!  It's to die for!  (Well, not literally.)

Since it was almost back to school time, Nora & I were there when Beau started football.  We got to see his first practice of tackle football ever!  (Not counting football camp this summer.)  Isn't he cute?

Saturday came and it was time for us to fly home.  This was Nora's first time flying and, of course, my first time flying alone with an infant.  Woo-wee.  It was entertaining to say the least.  The morning of our journey I went to plug in the portable DVD player and the crazy cord broke in two.  Taping did not work so my saving grace of Baby Einstein went out the window.  I quickly downloaded some Word World and Sesame Street on my iPod just in case.  We didn't end up using it but it was nice to knw I had something to fall back on.  Little did I know that you can't really get things out of your bag under the seat while flying with an infant on your lap...because, well, there's an infant on your lap.

Thankfully we had help checking our bag & car seat in and picking up our luggage when we got home because that was a lot of stuff!  Nora is pretty good so I know the flights could have been worse.  (I'm oh-so thankful they weren't!)

Beau, Molly, Ruby, & Nora at the Sarasota Airport

We had two short (around an hour each) flights with a quick layover in Atlanta between them.  Let's just say we were blessed with loving & patient people sitting beside us on the first flight.  The only open seat was a middle seat and there was no changing it.  Nora definitely kicked the poor grandpa beside me and repeatedly poked or tried talking to the sleeping grandma on my other side.  The grandpa was nice & regularly pulled out the Sky Mall magazine to show Nora the dogs.  Nora did fine until we started descending.  In rare form she started crying, screaming, and thrashing around.  (Try controlling that in the middle seat!)  I know she was unbelievably tired of me holding her in my lap and I'd be willing to bet her ears were hurting.  Thankfully she stopped a minute or so after we landed.  The whole episode was maybe 5 minutes.  I count that as a blessing.  I can handle a few minutes even with all the people commenting to her about how unhappy she is.

While in Atlanta several people still found us and commented about how happy she was now.  Haha.  Oops, sorry fellow flyers.  The layover went by very fast & we boarded the next plane.

Once again we had very patient kids, parents, & grandparents around us that would play peek-a-boo or "enjoy" their head & back massages instead of getting upset.  Almost immediately upon boarding Nora had a pungent present for me.  We made our way to the bathroom to change her.  Boy was that an experience.  As a 14 month old she was too long for the changing table.  It was a battle and neither of us "won".  After waiting on the plane for about 20 minutes and not taking off they reported that they could not find the pilot.  Something was wrong with the paperwork.  It had the flight time wrong on his stuff so they had to track him down to tell him to hurry up.  We waited for at least 45 minutes before we left.  At first the very nice flight attendant let Nora play and walk in the aisle or play in the back of the plane.  About 5-10 minutes before we left she fell fast asleep in my lap.  (Hooray!) She was such a trooper & slept all the way until we started descending.  You better believe I was nervous about her waking up in time for that!  I tried and tried to find her sippy cup (in case that helped her ears) but I couldn't.  (Turns out I left in the stroller we checked at the plane door.  Fail.)  Nora actually did fine and didn't whine or cry at all.

Of course she was very happy to see Daddy waiting for her in the baggage claim.  We were both happy to see him & to have successfully made it off the planes!  The only casualty we had was a big tear in the handle of our stroller (which cannot be replaced).  Fortunately for us, we now have compensation in the form of a $50 travel voucher for a future flight.  Sweet...maybe we'll fly next year.

Whew, that was long but not near as long as it all felt.  Moral of the story:  put your go-to things in the back pocket of the seat and pass out ear plugs to your neighbors if you fly with an infant.  =)

Cruisin' Brown Style {Round 2}

Disclaimer:  This post has TONS of photos.  I made them smaller so it's not quite as much scrolling down.  If you're not family...you may not have an interest in all of it.  Sorry.  We'll still love you even if you don't make it to the bottom.  =)

This summer we went on a highly anticipated vacation with my family (The Browns side).  We have been talking about taking this vacation for years.  We went on a cruise.  Which just may be one of the absolute best ways ever to vacation...just sayin'.  The reason this post is round 2 is because our family all went on a cruise together several years back when my grandparents sold their house on Lake Wylie.  My grandpa, Rara to us and most close friends, turned 75 this September.  Those that know him know how great he is.  =)  We love him.  He, along with my grandma (Tutu), is a wonderful person.  He loves his family and sets a great example for all of us.  So, for his big birthday he deserved a big surprise.  For a full year we all worked behind his back (okay only some of "us" worked) to make it happen.  On July 31st all 26 of us (sadly Buck couldn't make it--he had just started his new job in CT) headed to Tampa, FL to depart on our 7 day Exotic Western Carribean cruise on the Carnival's Legend.  We spent 2 days at sea and spent time at the ports of:  Cozumel, Belize, Isla Roatan, and Grand Cayman.

We started off the cruise the perfect way...eating!  Lunch was ready for us before our cabins were!  If you like to eat (especially trying some new things) a cruise is perfect.

Then, we made it to the top of the ship to watch us leaving Tampa.

It was so nice up there!

More food.  We like to dine in the formal (although it's only really formal two nights) restaurant.  Something about you get to pick your courses and try all kinds of things that we love.  There's also the hamburger/hot dog restaurant almost always open on deck and the buffet style open for hours in the middle of the ship.  There is no shortage of food on board!

I love this picture of Millie digging in!

Monday and Saturday were "Days at Sea".  We spent a lot of time out on the deck or by the pool on those days.

Playing in the splash pool

In the evenings we had lots to do.  We hung out, ate, sang karaoke, danced, saw shows went to activies, and even played a game.  One night we even learned how to do the Thriller dance.  We got to celebrate Rara's 75th birthday (early) with a special lunch and Steve's birthday with some special dessserts.

Tuesday we docked in Cozumel, Mexico.  Some of us never made it to the "frog" meeting station which could be partially my fault, but we all had fun nonetheless.  We shopped around but definitely made it back to the ship in time to eat.

Wednesday we docked in Belize City, Belize.  There were some exciting excursions planned but they had to be canceled.  Belize is a beautiful city but a 3rd world country so we (those pictured) rode the tender over and got off but did not go out and explore. Aaron & some men explored it earlier and didn't really encourage it.

Thursday we docked in Isla Roatan, Honduras.  It is beautiful with clear water and white sand!  Just may be a future vacation spot for us.  The beach (and a few shops) was all there really was at port so that's what we did!
Nora ready to go to the beach

Nora had an issue and ended up naked. =)

Rides to/from the beach

Friday we went to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.  We had a blast!  We went on an snorkeling/string ray excursion.  I'd highly recommend it.
First we took a tender over to Grand Cayman
There were so many of us we took our own bus for the excursion
It had a nice fold down middle seat
Give Way=Yield
We had this sweet little girl as our captain
Lucy, Katie, & Nora
The snorkeling was fabulous!

Nora stayed aboard most of the time & enjoyed Cheerios.
Then, we rode to the sting ray sand bar

Aaron kissed one

I kissed one (after it spit water all in my face)
Nora wasn't a big fan

Nora preferred swimming with Aaron  & Millie
Rara, Lily, & Emma snorkelers
Lily kissing it.  We all (well most) did it.
On the way back to land we spotted this bad boy

And Nora had had enough already

Misc.
After a blow out, I had to bathe her in this world's tiniest sink

In the midst of getting ready one day Nora crashed.  Fell asleep while eating Cheerios....talent.
All packed up and waiting to disembark.

Amazing.  All of it.
